How does receiving the "Pé de Meia" (a Brazilian slang term for a savings plan or similar benefit) work?

The Brazilian Federal Savings Bank (CAIXA Federal) is officially responsible for opening the account; therefore, the savings account where you will receive the monthly payments will be managed by CAIXA itself, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

To better understand the payment process, you can consult the official payment calendar. Below we provide more information about the payment procedures.

The main objective of the benefit is to encourage studies and the completion of high school. Many teenagers end up dropping out of school due to financial difficulties. The aid is intended to prevent these young people from exchanging school for informal work, allowing them to continue studying without having to face major financial problems along the way. The benefit also seeks to encourage registration for the ENEM (National High School Exam), and for this reason the program pays an additional amount to those who complete the registration.

The benefits of the "Pé-de-Meia" Program are directly aimed at the most needy students enrolled in high school (EM) in public school systems. In addition, it is necessary to meet some other requirements to be eligible for enrollment. Check the list of requirements for the aid program:

  • To have a CPF (Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry number);
  • Age between 14 and 24 years old, in addition to being regularly enrolled in high school
  • Studying in public schools
  • Participate in the mandatory exams;
  • Being a student and having family members registered in the (CadÚnico) Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government;
  • Meet the requirement of 80% attendance at school;
  • To complete the school year and pass;
  • It is not necessary for the student to be registered in the CadÚnico (Single Registry for Social Programs), it is sufficient that the student is part of a family benefiting from the Program. Bolsa Família (Family Allowance) benefits will have priority in the order of preference for granting incentives.

It is important to emphasize that the Ministry of Education will publish, through an ordinance, the list of criteria and updates necessary to participate in this program.
