Everything you need to know

1

What financial aid is

It is Coursera's own program for people who cannot pay for the course. With an approved application, you get access to the full course, the graded assignments and the certificate, at no cost.

It is requested course by course. If you want to take three courses from the list, you submit three applications.

2

Where to find the link

On the course page, right below the enrollment button, the Financial aid available link appears when the course accepts applications.

If the link does not appear, that course may not accept financial aid. In that case, look for a similar course, which often has the option.

3

How to answer the form

The form asks about your education level, your work situation, your income and why you want to take the course. Answer honestly and in your own words.

Explain how the course helps in your job or in the position you are looking for. Generic answers or answers copied from someone else are usually rejected.

4

Example of a goal

Something like: "I work in customer service and I want to learn Excel to get an administrative assistant job. I cannot pay for the course right now, and the certificate will help my resume."

Use the example only as an idea. Tell your real story, with details from your daily life.

5

While you wait for the answer

The review takes up to 15 days. In the meantime, you can already study the lessons unlocked in the preview; whatever you complete still counts after approval.

Keep an eye on your email, including the spam folder. The answer also appears on the course page.

6

If your application is rejected

You can submit a new application, reviewing your answers and better explaining your goal and your situation.

It is also worth trying another course from the list, which may have different access rules.

7

After approval

The course is fully unlocked, with graded assignments. Finish within the deadline shown, because access is time-limited.

When you pass all activities, the certificate appears in your account, ready to download as a PDF and share.

8

How to add it to your resume and LinkedIn

Each certificate has a verification link. On LinkedIn, add it under Licenses and certifications, with the course name, the institution and the link.

On your resume, include the course name, the institution and the year. In interviews, explain what you learned and give a practical example.

9

Beware of scams

Financial aid is requested only inside the Coursera website or app. No one from outside can "guarantee" approval.

Be wary of anyone who charges to fill in the application or sells a certificate without the course. Never share your password, OTP code or GCash details.

10

Who can apply

Financial aid is for people who cannot afford the course. There is no age limit, and students, workers and unemployed people can apply.

You do not need a degree. What matters is explaining your situation and your goal with the course clearly.

11

Questions about income

The form asks for an estimate of your annual income and how much you could pay. Enter real amounts, in pesos or converted to dollars, as the screen asks.

There is no right or wrong amount. Coursera uses these answers to understand your need, not to charge you anything later.

12

Applications for several courses

You can apply for aid for more than one course, with a separate application for each. But the safest approach is to focus on one or two at a time and finish each one on time.

Starting many courses at once and dropping them halfway breaks your rhythm. Finish one, download the certificate and only then apply for the next.

13

Deadline to finish

After approval, the course is unlocked for a limited period, shown in your account. Plan your studies to finish within that time.

If the deadline gets tight, reset the assignment dates to gain time. What you have already completed stays saved.

14

Certificate as a PDF

In your account, open Accomplishments to see all your certificates. You can download them as a PDF, print them or send the link to a recruiter.

The certificate shows your name, the course name, the institution and a verification code that any company can check on the website.

15

Go back to the list

With your first certificate secured, go back to the list of 8 courses and pick the next one. Adding two or three certificates in the same area greatly strengthens your resume.

Repeat the same path: enrollment, preview, financial aid application and completion of the activities.

16

Mistakes that get applications rejected

Very short answers, text copied from the internet and information that does not match are the most common reasons for rejection.

Write calmly, review before sending and show that you understand what the course teaches and how it will help your professional life.

17

Writing in English without fear

The form is in English, but your English does not need to be perfect. Simple, clear sentences work better than long, complicated texts.

If needed, write it first in Filipino and then translate it calmly, reviewing each sentence so it tells your real story.

18

When the certificate appears in your account

The certificate is released right after you pass the last graded activity. In some courses, grades for peer-reviewed assignments can take a few days.

If the certificate does not appear, check that all activities have a passing grade and that your name is correct in your profile.

19

Use the certificate to your advantage

Mention the certificate in your cover letter and explain in one sentence what you learned and how you applied it.

Recruiters value people who show initiative. A certificate completed on your own shows discipline, a quality every company looks for.
