In most cases, missing photos are still somewhere on your phone or in the cloud.
Why photos disappear
Photos that vanish from your gallery aren't always permanently deleted. Sometimes they were archived, moved to another folder, are in another Google account, or were removed only from the device while still saved in the cloud.
Understanding the cause helps you choose the right approach and saves time with programs you might not even need.
- Accidental deletion when freeing up space or clearing your gallery.
- Google Photos free up space feature, which removes only the phone copy.
- Switching phones or Google accounts without checking backup.
- Memory card with errors, formatted, or removed.
- System update or factory reset.
First step: stop using your phone
As soon as you notice the photos are missing, avoid taking new photos, downloading files, or installing many apps. When a photo is deleted, its space is marked as free, and any new file can take that space.
The sooner you start looking, the better your chances. This is especially important if you're going to try recovering directly from internal memory or the card.
Turn on Airplane mode if it will take a while
If you can't start now, Airplane mode prevents apps from downloading files and messages in the background.
Three places to look
1. Google Photos trash and archive
Photos deleted by Google Photos stay in trash for up to 60 days. Also check Archive, Locked Folder, and the web version, which shows everything in your account.
2. Internal memory with DiskDigger
If trash is empty and there was no backup, DiskDigger scans your phone's memory for images that haven't been overwritten yet.
3. SD card through your computer
When photos were on a memory card, your best option is to connect the card to your computer and use Recuva, a free program for Windows.
Prevent losing photos again
After recovering what you can, turn on Google Photos automatic backup and check from time to time that it's working. For very important photos, also keep a copy on your computer or external drive.
Frequently asked questions
Were photos that disappeared from your gallery deleted?
Not necessarily. They may have been archived, moved to another folder, or removed only from the phone while still saved in Google Photos.
How long do photos stay in Google Photos trash?
Photos with backup stay for up to 60 days. Photos without backup, on Android 11 or newer, usually stay for 30 days.
Can you recover photos without backup?
Sometimes. Apps like DiskDigger can find images in memory that haven't been overwritten yet, but results aren't guaranteed.
Does recovering photos cost anything?
Google Photos trash is free. DiskDigger and Recuva have free versions, with extra features in paid versions.
Why should I stop using my phone?
Because new files can take up the space of deleted photos, and then they can't be recovered anymore.
