Everything you need to know
Set up your account the right way
Use your full name, exactly as on your ID, because that is what appears on the certificate. Choose an email you check often, since the financial aid answers arrive there.
If you prefer, sign in with your Google account. Write down your password and do not share your access with anyone.
The free preview
Since 2025, most courses only unlock a free preview, with the first lessons and part of the material. It is a good way to test whether the course is right for you before applying for aid.
Some courses still show an option to watch more content without paying. This changes from course to course: check it on the enrollment screen.
Watch out for the free trial
During enrollment, the website may offer a free trial of the subscription. This trial asks for a card and starts charging when it ends.
If you do not want to pay anything, do not add a card. Use the preview and apply for financial aid, which is the way to get the full course at no cost.
How to enroll in a course
Search for the course name, open the right page and tap Enroll for Free. Then choose the option shown to study without paying, or the financial aid link, if the course has one.
The course goes into your My Learning area, on the website and in the app, and you pick up where you left off on any device.
Flexible deadlines
Courses have suggested dates for assignments, but you can reset the dates if you fall behind. Nothing you have already done is lost.
Set fixed study times during the week, such as two evenings and a Saturday morning. That makes it easier to finish within the financial aid deadline.
Studying in the app without using mobile data
In the Coursera app, download the lessons over Wi-Fi and watch them later, offline. The quizzes also work on your phone.
Turn on subtitles, which help a lot if you are still improving your English, and speed up or slow down the video as you like.
Grades and assignments
Each week has videos, readings and a quiz. Some courses have peer-graded assignments, with deadlines to submit and to review.
To get the certificate you need to pass all graded activities. You can retake quizzes if you do not pass the first time.
Common problems
If the financial aid button does not appear, that course may not accept applications. Look for a similar course on the list, which almost always has an alternative.
If the page opens in another language, change the language in the website footer or in the app settings.
Account security
Always sign in by typing coursera.org or through the official app from the store. Be wary of links sent by message promising a "free premium course".
Coursera does not ask for bank passwords or OTP codes by message. If someone asks, it is a scam.
What the enrollment screen usually looks like
After you tap Enroll for Free, the website shows the access options for that course. Read calmly before confirming, because the order of the buttons changes from one course to another.
Look for the words preview, audit or financial aid. If the only option is the free trial with a card, go back and use the financial aid link on the course page.
Set up your profile
In your account profile, fill in your country, education level and area of interest. This helps the website suggest courses similar to the ones you are taking.
Also check your time zone, so assignment deadlines show in Philippine time and you do not miss any submission.
Forums and help from other learners
Each course has a forum where learners ask questions about lessons and assignments. Before asking, use the forum search: someone has almost always had the same question.
Helping other learners is also a way to lock in the content. Many Filipinos take part in the forums, so it is common to find explanations close to your own reality.
Notifications and reminders
Turn on app notifications to get reminders about lessons and deadlines. You choose the days and times you want to study.
If you prefer, turn off promotional emails and keep only course and financial aid notices on.
Studying with a weak internet connection
If your connection is weak, download the week's lessons all at once while on Wi-Fi, and lower the video quality in the app settings.
Readings and quizzes use little data. Leave assignments that require file uploads for when your connection is better.
Next step: the certificate
Once you are enrolled and have tried the first lessons, apply for financial aid to unlock the full course and the certificate.
The next guide shows where the link is, what to answer on the form and how long the answer takes.
How to keep your pace until the end
Most people give up in the second or third week. To avoid that, set a small daily goal, such as one lesson or one reading, and check off each day you complete.
Studying with a friend or coworker also helps: you agree on times, solve doubts together and keep each other on track.
Studying on a computer or on your phone
Your phone is great for videos and readings. For Excel, data and Python assignments, a computer is much better because of the keyboard and the bigger screen.
If you do not have a computer at home, use one at a public library, a school or an internet café just for the practical assignments.
What happens if I stop halfway
Nothing is lost. Your progress is saved in your account and you continue where you left off when you come back, on the website or in the app.
If the course was unlocked through financial aid, just keep an eye on the access deadline, which appears in your account.
