Android's notification history may show the text of a message that was deleted by the sender.
How it works
When a message arrives, Android saves the notification. Even if the sender deletes it later, the record remains in the history.
The feature only records what arrived after it was activated. It doesn't retrieve anything from before.
In the conversation, the message still appears as deleted. The original text remains only in the history.
Enable notification history
The names change slightly from one brand to another.
Go to Settings > Notifications. On some phones, also go to Advanced settings.
Tap on Notification history and enable the option. It has been available since Android 11.
The path is Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
Go back to this screen and look for WhatsApp notifications from the last 24 hours.
What can and cannot be seen
Knowing your limits prevents wasting time.
Notifications that you have already dismissed also remain in your history.
- You can see short texts that arrived as notifications.
- Long messages may appear truncated.
- What emerges from the open or muted conversation is not apparent.
- Photos and audio files appear only as notifications, without the file itself.
Beware of third-party applications
Apps that promise to show deleted messages do the same thing, but they request access to all notifications, including bank codes.
No serious app reads other people's messages.

Does it work on iPhone?
No. The iPhone does not keep a notification history.
I accidentally deleted a message. What now?
Tap Undo on the warning that appears for a few seconds. After that, you can only use the backup.
Can I see messages from before activation?
No. The history starts recording from the moment it's activated.
